German Shepherd Dog

The dog is man’s oldest friend. It has been with man for thousands of years. It helps man in many ways. It guards his house and cattle. It hunts for him. It can warn him of the coming danger. Of all animals it is the most faithful.

There are about 150 kinds of dogs. They are of different colors, shapes and sizes. The St. Bernard is the largest breed. A St. Bernard may weigh twice as much as a man. The Yorkshire terrier is one of the smallest dogs. A fully grown Yorkshire terrier may weigh less than a small pot of jam.



Most dogs are kept as pets, but some do useful work also. There are working dogs, hunting dogs and sporting dogs. The most useful of them is the sheepdog. It guards sheep and looks after them. It also helps to find them when they are lost.

The German shepherd dog is the most intelligent. It is also called the Alsatian. It can be trained very easily. It can be trained to help blind people. It can take its blind master safely across a busy road. The Alsatian also helps the police. It can help to find out thieves and other bad man.

But do you know dogs have poor eyesight? They cannot see colors at all. But a dog’s sense of smell is thousands of times better than ours.

Cats and dogs

Have you noticed one surprising difference between cats and dogs?

Dogs, like almost all animals, move their front leg on one side at the same times as the back leg on the other side.

Cats, like the camel and the giraffe are move their front and back legs on the same side at the same time, then the front and back legs on the other side.

In the good old days, acts and dogs were not enemies. They lived like good friends. They ate and played together.

But then they became bitter enemies. 1 will tell you how it happened.

In those good days, a man had a cat and a dog. The cat kept his master’s house free from mice. The dog kept it safe from thieves. But the man was very selfish. He didn’t give the animals enough to eat.

“No paper, no meat!’’ said the man the dog was now very angry with the cat. “You stupid!’’ he said. “You have lost such an important paper. You are always so careless. I hate you!’’ the two animals began to quarrel.

So from that day dogs and cats became very bitter enemies. Look, how this dog is running after the cat!

And that is not all! Cats hate mice because they nibbled up that important agreement.
